Giving a healthy education for every student who comes Loyola Campus is the goal of Loyola Campus- Trincomalee. The Centre strive to progress and help develop the skills of the students. By creating a generation of skillful youth Loyola Campus- Trincomalee hopes to make a change in the society. We strive for progress, not perfection. Our campus is trying harder and harder to achieve this goal.

The students who follow the Cambridge English Language Programme of JWL have sat for the online English Placement Test. While there were a number of disparities in the results that they obtained and the English knowledge of the students, the Centre and Staff have tried to find the best level that suits the students. At the moment all the students are placed in the Elementary class. Progress tests under each unit are conducted and corrections are done regularly.

Mr Luke, the volunteer form Australia left Trincomalee after having completed his term in Sri Lanka. Mr Aiden, the new Australian volunteer has been extremely helpful in conducted the regularly classes. Mr Aiden is involved in teaching at Loyola Campus- Trincomalee and St Joseph’s College Trincomalee. His presence is much appreciated.

Centre for Justice and Change (CJC) an organization established for the promotion of human rights and law in societies have come forward to conduct certificate programmes in basic law, personality development, human resource management, self-evaluation etc. The students of Loyola Campus- Trincomalee are beneficiaries. The classes are conducted on Saturdays. These classes immensely help the students to improve themselves.

Evening classes are running as usual. As the number of students coming for elocution class is more, the teacher who is in charge has decided to divide the students into two batches.

The English classes at Loyola Campus- Trincomalee continue with the same pace. Although the numbers have been low compared to the previous batches, both the Facilitators and the students are invested in the subject matter and mastering skills that will make them futures better. The students who follow the GEL programme of JWL have not been divided into separate groups. All of them study together and the Centre hopes to check the need to divide the class depending on the online placement test results and the feedback of the teachers.

The three hours class allocated for a normal day was divided into three sessions so that each teacher gets a chance to improve the skills of the students. Since the Centre has students from different age groups, the students are taught first given a through introduction to basic English. It is hoped that this will help them in following the lesson later on.

A/L English classes are taken by three Facilitator, each concentrating on a different skill. The main areas that the Facilitators concentrate are speaking, reading, writing and listening. Moreover, the A/L English text book also is followed in the class to make the students better prepared for the A/L English exams.

Kids’ classes are conducted in two sessions, providing individual concentration to each child. This has brought more students toward this class. Paper tests, poem reciting, storytelling and etc. are done to provoke the interest of every child.

This month the Centre decided to provide the opportunity for the students who have enrolled for the GEL course of JWL to participate in a certificate program. The programme consists of six sessions on six different days. The first session was conducted on 27 June 2018.  The programme is done under different topics to help the students.

The month of May began with the Teacher Training programme organized by the Country Office in Kandy from 4-7 May 2018. The training was held at Fatima Retreat House (A Jesuit Retreat House) in Kandy. The three-day programme provided the staff a good opportunity to come to know about Loyola Campus operations better and to learn a number of new skills.  It was also an occasion to come to know different people from various Loyola Campuses in Sri Lanka.

The Computer Application Assistant students who completed their practical exams in April, had their theory exams in May. Every student attempted to perform well during the exam and mark the level of their proficiency. The old library of the Centre is renovated and filled with a number of new books. It serves as a source for students to acquire new knowledge and skills. This was a much felt need of the Centre.

Around eighteen students enrolled for the A/L General English classes arranged at the Centre. This is a new initiative of Loyola Campus- Trincomalee. Since many of the students are weak in their skill in writing, two days of classes are devoted to train them in better writing skills in English. Other than writing, this particular class concentrates on making the students comprehend the A/L General English text book.

The student intake for the period May-August is low for the Centre. However, at the moment the Centre has one class who follow the GEL programme of JWL. The applications are welcomed until the Centre conducts placement tests.

Life is lived not in time but in each moment that we are alive. This idea is quite true when we think about the moments that the Centre had been a part of journey of the students who are completing their courses in April 2018. A number of activities were planned towards the end of completing the course

Abraham Jesus, known to the Staff and students of Trincomalee as AJ completed his term as a volunteer staff and returned back to the USA. He was part of Loyola Campus- Trincomalee from January 2018. The staff arranged a function to express gratitude for his contribution and service in Trincomalee.

The students who follow the course Computer Application Assistant has acquired the necessary skills related to the areas of study to the satisfaction of the Centre. They have completed their project as well as the practical works demanded during the course.

A personality development workshop was conducted by CPPHR for the benefit of Loyola Campus- Trincomalee students on the theme of ‘Goal Setting’. During the session each student was given a task to complete. Moreover, a number of other activities like group tasks, and a presentation based on leadership development was a part of the programme.

The third week of April was fully dedicated for the revision and preparation of the final exams. The students eagerly awaited the exams which were conducted during the final week of April. All the students confidently faced the exam both written and oral. A student tour to Kandy was organized on 27 April 2018. The students visited the dam, botanical garden and several other important and famous places in Kandy. This was the 1^sttour of Loyola Campus and all the students and staff enjoyed the day.

The Centre continues its classes for the children in the afternoons and the evening. The children show great enthusiasm and ea-gerness to learn English and acquire new skills that will be very useful for them in future. The children are more receptive and the Centre feels that learning English needs to be initiat-ed from a younger age. It would better facilitate the process of acquiring the skills in English.

The facilitators spent a considerable number of days in preparing for the new batch starting from September 2017. The new textbook for the JWL Glob-al English programme was studied by the staff and a number of strategies creat-ed in implementing the methodology introduced in the text books. The need to contexualise the textbooks and the need to be flexible in following the textbooks was highlighted. The facili-tators need to transcend beyond the textbooks in trying to understand the situation of the students who come to the Centre to learn.

The new courses offered at the Centre was advertised in the Trincomalee town . Through a number of ways, the information about the courses offered at the Cen-tre has been circulated and made know to those who might be interested.

The Centre and the team of facilitators eargerly await the arrival of students dur-ing the first week of Sep-tember. The Centre hopes to reach out to many stu-dents in and around Trin-comalee through the aca-demic programmes offered at the Centre.

Loyola Campus- Trincomalee was established in July 2017 using the existing structure of the Jesuit English Academy Trincomalee. Jesuit English Academy has been offering certificate courses in English and several other subjects for a number of years. The Government Technical College, established in 1995 in the existing Academy building, laid the foundation for what was now known as the Jesuit Academy of Trincomalee and now Loyola Campus- Trincomalee. The Centre has become a part of the Jesuit Tertiary Education endeavor in Sri Lanka, Loyola Campus.

Loyola Campus- Trincomalee has already started offering preparatory courses in English and English classes for children. In September, the Centre will offer the Jesuit Worldwide Learning (JWL) affiliated Global English Programme for the benefit of the students in and around Trincomalee. There are a number of other courses such as Microsoft Office and Sinhala that will also commence from the month of September.

Trincomalee has been identified by Loyola Campus to be one of the Centres where students require professional expertise in English, Computer and several other professional courses. Loyola Campus- Trincomalee hopes to be registered under the Tertiary Vocation Education Commission (TVEC) soon and thereafter run NVQ level courses providing better opportunities for the students in and around Trincomalee. Moreover, the multi-ethnic and multi-religious environment of the locality will provide fertile ground for Loyola Campus to work for peacebuilding and reconciliation through tertiary and higher education.
